How it's calculated
Each month: balance = balance × (1 + r) + depositr = yearly rate ÷ 12. Deposits are added at the end of each month.
Worked example
$10,000 plus $500 a month at a hypothetical 7% for 30 years grows to about $691,150, of which $190,000 is your deposits and about $501,000 is growth. At 4%, the same deposits reach about $380,000.
What is compound interest?
Compound interest means you earn growth on your earlier growth, not just on what you put in. Over long periods that snowball effect can make up most of the ending balance, which is why starting early tends to matter more than starting big.
The rule of 72
Divide 72 by a yearly rate to roughly estimate how many years it takes money to double. At 6%, that's about 12 years.
