How it's calculated

Resting calories (Mifflin–St Jeor):
Women: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age − 161
Men: 10 × kg + 6.25 × cm − 5 × age + 5
Daily calories = Resting calories × Activity factor About 3,500 calories is often used as a rough estimate of a pound of body weight, so 500 fewer calories a day is roughly a pound a week. Real results vary.

Worked example

A 30-year-old woman, 65 kg and 165 cm: 10 × 65 + 6.25 × 165 − 5 × 30 − 161 = 1,370 calories at rest. With light activity (× 1.375), that's about 1,884 calories a day to maintain.

Common questions

How accurate is this?

Mifflin–St Jeor is one of the most widely used equations, but any formula is an estimate. Individual needs can differ by a few hundred calories. Track how your weight changes over a few weeks and adjust.

How low should I go?

Very low-calorie diets can be unsafe without medical supervision. If you're aiming for big changes, or are pregnant, nursing, or managing a health condition, talk with a doctor or registered dietitian first.
